Book Cafe at Dehradun

The English Book Depot

Have you heard of EBD, or The English Book Depot? We’ve been spreading the love of reading since 1923, all thanks to Sh Narain Dass ji, the dad of Dev Dutt and the grandad of Sandeep and Sanjay Dutt. Back then, it was just a small bookshop in Ferozpur, but now it’s a place where we’re all about creating a friendly atmosphere. Mark your calendars for July, because it’s the birthday month of Dev Dutt and Snehlata, and we’re thrilled to celebrate both of them. If you’re ever in the area, we’d be absolutely delighted if you could drop by our Book Cafe and say hello!

The Snehlata Prize

The Snehlata Prize, a unique award, honours individuals who have dedicated their lives to promoting reading among children. We celebrate it annually on July 24th in Dehradun, in the Doon Valley, with her community. We gather in her garden and at The English Book Depot to honour her alongside family and friends.

Prize Winners

2026: Brinda Ghosh

 Mrs Ghosh, who chose to be a teacher, has spent her incredible 47 years inspiring and pushing educational institutions to be more creative. She started at Vikaasa in Madurai, South India, then went on to work at well-known schools like Welham Girls’ School and YPS Patiala. As the founder principal of two schools, she created lively communities where learning and reading are celebrated. After she retired as Director, Staff Training at the Gyanshree School, she now mentors and coaches at The Teachers Academy and reads at My Good School every Sunday.

2025: Swati Roy

Swati Roy, a keen entrepreneur who loves children’s books, started Eureka Books and the Bookaroo Children’s Literature Festival. She’s also a big part of the Book Cafe community, moving from working in media to children’s literature to help kids fall in love with reading. Eureka! and Bookaroo have really changed how children’s literature is enjoyed in India, making books and reading easier and more fun with places like coffee shops in Dehradun and the English Book Depot.

Dev Dutt Award for Schools

  • The Dev Dutt Trophy for Excellence in Skill at The Fabindia School recognises outstanding achievement.
  • The Dev Dutt Prize for the Topper in Political Science at the Welham Girls’ School highlights academic excellence.
  • The Dev Dutt Prize for the most well-read student at Gyan Anant Vidyalaya is a testament to the importance of reading.
